Acantha Lang - Beautiful Dreams
Details
On Beautiful Dreams Acantha Lang blends funk with southern Blues, telling highly personal tales atop spirited, shimmering grooves. Acantha's storytelling style harkens back to age-old Blues traditions while grounding itself in contemporary themes, delivering gripping songs on love, Black strength and womanhood with confidence and pride.
Editors' Note
"Beautiful Dreams is an album that cites its sources. Comprised entirely of original compositions, it does a beautiful job of capturing the sound and soul of some of the genre’s very best. Notes of Gladys Knight, Mavis Staples and even Aretha can all be found in Acantha’s voice, backed by pleasingly throwback musical vibes that alternate between soul, blues and funk, with touches of the ever-present gospel sounds from which all of these other traditions derive. But the real accomplishment here is not just the album’s ability to pick up the threads of these past artists, it’s tying them together in a way that is at once unique to this artist, and perhaps even more importantly, resonates with the whole reason the genre existed in the first place." - Bryan Mason, AphroChic.
