Sustainability

Since our brand was founded in 2007, AphroChic has been committed to sustainability. Believers in slow fashion and home decor, all of our items are made to order to limit waste. We make it a point to work with artists, artisans, and master craftspeople from around the world who have sustainable practices. And we always use the highest quality materials available. You will see eco-conscious fabrics in our catalogue, like organic cotton, and eco-friendly manufacturing process, including working with reclaimed and recycled materials. We believe that as a brand, and as a people, we must do our part in protecting the planet.

Social Impact

Social justice and activism have always been core values of the AphroChic brand, which began in 2007 with a focus on increasing visibility for Black creatives in the design space and Black consumers as a meaningful audience within the design marketplace. Since then our work has expanded, using home as the lens through which to view all of Black life, its many histories and cultures, its myriad experiences, obstacles and triumphs — and the varied contexts in which it takes place.

AphroChic’s Design Against Hate initiative was established in 2016. With a focus on designing a better world, the brand has worked on several initiatives dedicated to diversity, voting rights, reproductive health and the preservation of democracy. In addition, AphroChic has worked on issues related to Long COVID. Co-founder, Jeanine Hays, has lived with the condition since 2020, and the couple are strong advocates for increased health care access and virus mitigation practices to protect people from contracting the virus. AphroChic donates a proceeds of sales monthly to organizations that work to bring about positive transformative change in our world.

Over the years, we have come to understand design, interior and otherwise, as cultural artifacts with deep historical, social and even political importance. Recognizing how much of a society — both its goods and ills — exists “by design,” we believe that there is much that each one of us can do to help design a better world. AphroChic exists to highlight all who are currently dedicated to this work in the African Diaspora, and to inspire those to come.
