Editors' Note

This piece is part of our Juneteenth Collection celebrating Black liberation. Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday in the United States on June 17, 2021, when President Joseph R. Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. It marked the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983. However, the holiday itself has been celebrated in Black communities for over a century, sometimes referred to as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day or Jubilation. Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865, when Union troops arrived in Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation that had gone into effect two years prior. The joyous day marked the end of slavery for those in Texas. Led by retired teacher, counselor, and activist, Opal Lee, Juneteenth finally became a national holiday some 158 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
