Our Tonga Ash Dining Table is inspired by the unique, geometric stool designs of the Tonga people - a Bantu-speaking group located in portions of Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. Originating in Central Africa, the Tonga — also called Batonga — first arrived in Zimbabwe in around 300 AD. By 1100 they had settled on both sides of the Zambezi River. Recognizing the opportunities that proximity to water offered for hunting as well as growing and gathering, groups of Tonga found their ways to the Tshongokwe, Kana, and Mzola Rivers, settling there as well. Since then, the Tonga have remained reliant on rivers for their survival. This was disrupted however when the Tonga were displaced en masse in the 1950s by construction of the Kariba Dam. 50,000 members of the Batonga community were relocated, and continue to face challenges caused by poor infrastructure and climate change. Nevertheless, many people of Tonga ethnicity have risen to national prominence in Zambia, including the late Anderson K. Mazoka, founder of the United Party for National Development (UPND), Zambia's current ruling party, and Hakainde Hichilema, the nation's current president. Tonga stools are carved from a single piece of wood, into a variety of striking designs. The motifs all hold symbolic meanings, and the stools themselves are considered status symbols for royals, nobles and elders. Passed down through generations, along with the skill of their manufacture, Tonga stools are a frequent sight at ceremonies such as weddings and other rites of passage.
