The name Solange traces back through the French “solennel” to the Latin, “sollemnis,” suggesting a ritual, ceremony or observance. The name has had many notable owners, including Dr. Solange Ashby, a language professor, Egyptologist and self-described Africanist. With a focus on reuniting the study of Egypt and Nubia with the wider historical narrative of the African continent as a whole, Dr. Ashby specializes in sacred languages. She is proficient in Egyptian hieroglyphs, Demotic, Coptic, Meroitic and Ethiopic, as well as Biblical Greek and Hebrew. Her language expertise facilitates the explorations of historical religious transformation in Northeast Africa and the Middle East that are the core of her work, which also includes investigations into the lives and roles of women at various levels of society, as mothers, priestesses and queens. Specifically her lectures have focused on ancient Nubian / Meroitic queens whose periods of rule in the 1st century BC coincided with Egypt’s occupation by Rome and the writing of the gospels of the New Testament. Holding a Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Chicago, Dr. Ashby teaches Egyptology and Nubian Studies in the Near Eastern Languages and Cultures department at UCLA.
