The Senufo (Senoufo, Senefo, or Syénambélé) people of West Africa are a nation spread across Mali, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, and Ghana. As is true for many African groups, the descriptor, "Senufo" is primarily linguistic, referring to a collection of some twenty languages occurring within the larger, Gur language family, itself a branch of the Niger-Congo linguistic tree. While Senufo culture revolves primarily around agriculture, Senufo society has special reverence for artisans and is known, both regionally and worldwide, for the accomplishments of its metalworkers, musicians, weavers, potters and woodworkers. Senufo sculpture was among the African artistic traditions that served as the basis for the work of Pablo Picasso and other European artists in the Cubist movement. Currently, Senufo furniture, and in particular, the iconic stool, rank among the most popular design trends in the U.S. and elsewhere. Originally carved from a single piece of wood, Senufo stools, like Akan, Tonga and various other traditions, carry symbolic meanings together with functional uses. Carvings can be simple or ornate, employing various geometric designs or motifs referencing animals both natural and supernatural, reflecting Senufo spiritual traditions and beliefs. Depending on stature, some were used for mundane tasks, providing a seat for women doing laundry, while larger stools often held ceremonial roles in initiation rites, weddings and funerals. Many were passed from generation to generation as heirlooms.
