Named for the Mende region in Lagos, Nigeria that is home to Cane Village, a large open-air marketplace where rattan and raffia products are woven and sold, the village is host to a number of merchants offering a wide assortment of artistically created products for the home. These include baskets, vases, tables, chests, and a variety of swing and lounge chairs among numerous other objets d'art. A community staple and tourist attraction, the village is nevertheless in constant danger of extinction, as it has no formally established site of operation, and thus has been forced to relocate several times, despite paying for trade permits to operate. Once located on private land, the collective moved when the owner required the land for another purpose. Shifting sites to the space beneath the Ojota-link bridge, the situation remained tenuous as construction under the bridge began displacing merchants in early 2022. Since then, village merchants have continued to move while petitioning for a permanent home. Still in operation, Cane village continues to draw crowds and support through its beautiful, handcrafted wares, while working towards a more sustainable future to ensure that the commerce and artistic traditions of its merchants continue.
