Editors' Note
This piece is part of our Kano Collection, named for the Kano region of Nigeria known for their rattan artisanship. The kingdom of Kano was founded in 999 AD by Bagauda as one of the Seven True Hausa states (“Hausa Bakwai”) according to the Kano Chronicle, written in the 1890s. Islamic scholars of the Malinke (Mandinka) people of Mali introduced Islam to the kingdom in the 1340s. Despite European presence in the region, Kano — a Fulani territory since 1807 — flourished as a major west African economic power into the 1820s and did not fall to the British until 1905. After little more than 50 years, Nigeria gained independence from Great Britain in 1960. Explore the full collection, including the Kano Bed, dresser and nightstand.
