Editors' Note
Pieces in the Aeta Collection are made with capiz shells - thin, almost translucent shells that come from the outer shell of the Placuna placenta mollusk, which is found in the coastal waters of the Philippine Sea. The Philippines is home to a diverse population, including the Aeta, who are considered descendants of the original inhabitants of the archipelago, and who this collection is named for. Already a collective term encompassing several distinct ethnicities, the Philippine Aeta are considered as part of the wider Negrito community of Southeast Asian people. Negrito, meaning “little Black [people]” was a term introduced by Spanish missionaries in the 1500s to describe the dark-skinned peoples of Southeast Asia. The Negrito population is distinguished by features such as dark skin, coiled hair, and other characteristics typically associated with “Blackness” today. Not widely held to have African heritage, causing some question as to whether they can correctly be considered “Black” people, some in the Filipino community have connected their arrival in the area, some 40,000 years ago, to African migration patterns at the time.
