Eucalyptus Wood Bamileke Stool Set of 2
Details
These handmade Bamileke stools hail from Cameroon. Carved by hand from one continuous piece of wood, the lumber must first be thrown into the river to soften, and then the ornate web pattern is hand-carved into the hardwood. The intricate pattern on each table represents the web of the earth spider, a symbol of divine wisdom.
Editors' Note
An iconic piece of African furniture, Bamileke stools are also referred to as African stools, King’s stools, or bird's nests. These hand-carved stools have long been used as ceremonial seating to indicate the status and power of tribal chiefs and kings. Each stool is hand-carved from a single piece of local wood and then stained. The status of the owner is depicted by the particular design. The many traditional design motifs found in Bamileke stools include leopards, spiders, lizards, buffalo, elephants, lions and pythons as well as human figures, heads, and other more abstract designs. Today, these stunning pieces can be featured both indoors or outside, as part of a home's interior design.
