The arabesque — an intricately detailed pattern employing floral elements in a repeatable scheme — is an Islamic motif dating back to the 9th century. By the Renaissance it had become popular in Europe as well, due, in all likelihood, to the extended periods of Arab and African rule in southern Europe including Spain, Portugal and Italy. In Africa too, the hypnotic quality of arabesque design found an eager reception, communicated like Islam itself through a combination of conquest and trade that was far more balanced than is typically remembered. Along the Swahili coast in particular, arabesque designs feature prominently alongside Hindu and African motifs in the famous doors and archways for which the stone architecture of that culture has become famous. The popularity of arabesque designs has never really faded with many modern interpretations continuing to emerge. Our Jazz Arabesque pattern is one such offering. A celebration of the global appeal and impact of Black music as embodied in jazz — the African American creation recognized as the first truly American art form — the pattern celebrates the colorful and eclectic culture of New Orleans, widely recognized as the birthplace of Jazz and still celebrated as one of its most sacred sites. A true arabesque, the pattern incorporates floral elements around geometric designs created out of some of the instruments most essential to the Jazz sound: the saxophone, the upright bass, and the piano — alongside some of their most profound accompaniments, tap shoes and the djembe drum. Infinitely repeatable, the Jazz Arabesque is a modern take on an ancient design celebrating a conversation between cultures that has lasted for nearly a millennium.
