Editors' Note
This bike is named in honor of Isaac R. Johnson, whose invention in the late 1800s was significant to the foundation of the modern day bicycle. The bicycle was one of the 19th century’s most important technological innovations, and by the dawn of the 20th, several important Black inventors and cyclists would help shape its history. Little is known about Johnson before 1899, when the New York native would become the first American to invent and patent a bicycle frame. Following the marketing of the first commercially successful Safety Bike by John Kemp Starley some five years prior, Johnson’s design revolutionized cycling, creating a more stable and adaptable frame that was easier to assemble and disassemble, and which allowed the completed bike to be folded for easy storage. Like other Safety Bike designs, Johnson’s included the pedal at the center of his diamond frame, yet it featured a sophisticated interlocking tube system for its unique diamond frame that is still used to this day. Johnson’s patent reshaped the bicycle in the same year that Major Taylor became the first African American to win a world championship in cycling, going further on the trail blazed by Kittie Knox, the acclaimed female cyclist who had by then become the first African American admitted into the League of American Wheelmen. A modern reflection of Isaac’s design, with the Isaac Hybrid City Bike we pay homage to those who paved the way for future generations of cyclists.
