“Have you ever walked into a plant nursery or greenhouse and instantly felt a change in the air? The feeling of calm that washes over you as you tilt your head back, close your eyes and take a deep breath. This is the feeling you’re looking to replicate when you bring plants into your home.” – Hilton Carter, in "Wild at Home"
For Hilton Carter, plants become one with a space, as if they are living furniture among other accent pieces. Believing plants need care and attention the same way humans do, Hilton says, “Taking care of plants is similar to life. It shows me how we both have the same needs.” In an interview with Office Hours, Hilton states, “There have been moments where a plant has outgrown my space. I would then have to make the decision on what to do with it…And a plant will never be trash, but someone’s trash is another one’s treasure. So while it is difficult to separate yourself and now no longer does or you’re having a difficult time with it, there’s always someone who will accept that living thing which can bring joy to them.”
