Editors' Note

Named for the iconic sickle-sword of ancient Egypt, renowned for its gold-like appearance and abstract shape. Originally evolved from battle-axes, the shape of the khopesh is unlike almost any other type of sword. A straight base tapering into a dramatic curve and hook, the khopesh provided a number of functions for the warriors of Egypt and the other nations that employed it, including Sumeria and Mesopotamia. Originally made of bronze, and in service with Egypt's armies from around 2500 BC - 1300 BC, the weapon facilitated Egypt's rise to the height of its power during its New Kingdom Era (1550 - 1070 BC). During that time, the khopesh took on a significance far beyond its battlefield utility. Frequently depicted in hieroglyphics as a symbol of power and authority, they were carried by soldiers during the funeral rites of queen Hatshepsut and found in the tombs of several pharaohs, most famously that of Tutankhamun, which was excavated in 1922, some 3,200 years after it was first sealed.
