Cornet Vase
Details
Evoking the jazzy, 20s vibe of a Harlem club, the Cornet Vase is inspired by the iconic combination of a brass horn with a plunger mute, and the organic texture of a cowrie shell. This ceramic, asymmetrical vase features a white semi-gloss glaze with warm undertones, tapered base, and an exaggerated wide middle. The bottom half of the vase has carved lines, while the top surface is a smooth but organic texture. Making a statement on its own or as a pair, the narrow opening of the vase offers a perfect opportunity for stems or other floral displays. An ideal accessory for a console or shelf styled with culture and story in mind.
Editors' Note
First created in the 1820s, the cornet offered an improvement on the older posthorn with the addition of valves, which allowed better control of the sound and resulting more melodic play. Before the end of the century the instrument took on new life in the hands of Charles “Buddy” Bolden, also known as “King,” whose reign over the New Orleans jazz scene began in 1898, and lasted through 1906. The role later passed, along with the nickname to Joseph “King” Oliver, a fellow cornetist. Later luminaries included Bubber Miley, a noted master of the plunger mute, Louis Armstrong, and Thad Jones who introduced the instrument to the Bebop scene.
