Editors' Note
Named for the Cape Starling, a beautiful iridescent blue bird indigenous to the southern nations of the African continent, the Cape Starling is found to varying degrees in Angola, Gabon, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Lesotho and South Africa. Of a medium size, its blue-green glossy coat, similar to the smaller “blue-eared” starlings, is unique for its uniform appearance, devoid of the dark ear patches and blue-magenta belly coloring that distinguishes other starling types. Typically a non-migratory bird in most habitats, the Cape Starling is found wherever there are trees in which it can nest. As a result, its habitats are rather varied, known to include rough grasslands, open woodlands, savannas, gardens and parks. Moreover, the Cape Starling is highly communal, forming large flocks and searching for food alongside other members of the starling family.
