The first African American to win an Oscar for Best Actor, the film legend starred in 57 movies and directed nine. A dedicated civil rights activist, Poitier was one of the most celebrated actors of the 20th century, playing poignant roles that gave voice to the Black experience and the human condition. James Baldwin once wrote of Poitier after seeing him in A Raisin In The Sun, "Sidney has a fantastic presence on the stage, a dangerous electricity that is rare indeed and lights up everything for miles around."
