Editors' Note
The Dracaena draco tree is native to several islands off the coast of Africa, including the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Madeira, and western Morocco, and is the natural symbol of the island of Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands. Representing the island's history, culture, and nature, it is on Tenerife where one can find the Drago Milenario (Thousand Year old Draco), a famous giant dragon tree located in Parque del Drago. The tree is believed by many to be over a thousand years old. Since trees such as this do not form growth rings, the actual age of the plant is unknown, though the tree was declared a national monument in 1917. Nevertheless, this iconic plant is known to live for hundreds of years, and features a famous red resin, called “dragon’s blood”. The Dragon Tree or Dragon Palm, as it is sometimes referred to, is a symbol of strength, longevity and mystery, and its presence in Tenerife is a reminder of the island’s deep connection with nature.
